This year, First Night Akron celebrates its 18th year as a family friendly New Year's celebration that entertains with music, fireworks and activities for adults and children alike.
• More than 80 artists and performing groups will entertain during the event, including such diverse musical acts as the Beatles tribute Hard Day's Night, Colin Dussault's Blues Project, the Akron Symphony's Gospel Meets Symphony Choir, the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble, Fergie & the Bog Dogs, the Smokin' Fez Monkeys (jug band), a Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash tribute show, Akron Big Band and the Street Beat Drummers.
• Other acts include magicians, clowns, ice carvers, a live-action "Angry Birds" show for kids, theater skits, fire twirlers, Irish dancers, jugglers, a hypnotist, stilt walkers and improv comedy. Carriage Limousine Services will offer horse-drawn sleigh rides throughout downtown.
• Children can make masks, festive hats, percussion instruments and "Angry Birds" crafts, get their faces painted, race mini Soap Box Derby cars, get their picture taken in a Soap Box Derby car and take the "Pit Crew" challenge.
• Don't worry about the weather; plenty of First Night activities are held indoors throughout downtown. METRO buses and trolleys provide transportation between the 10 venues.
• Food will be available at several First Night venues and at surrounding restaurants. Note: First Night sites, performances and stages are alcohol free.
• First Night features not one, but two fireworks shows. The FirstMerit Kids Fireworks Show goes off at 9 p.m., while the main FirstMerit Fireworks Show wraps up the festivities at midnight.
